After leaving a career in architecture to be a full-time mom, I rediscovered knitting as a way to be both productive and creative in between nursing, naps and diaper changes. I was surprised to discover that knitting design isn’t all that different from architectural design – in both cases there is a three dimensional problem to be solved, and specific materials and tools that constrain the process. The big difference for me is the immediacy and tactility of the work: with knitting I can personally work out the details of construction and colour with my own two hands, choosing the materials and trying different approaches to see what works best. And then there is the yarn – thousands of types and colours and weights, all waiting for the perfect project…
