Striped I-Cord Edging
There are several different ways to work an applied i-cord, but I recently discovered a method that beats all the rest. I found it somewhere down the rabbit hole of a Google search, and unfortunately can’t find it again to give the creator proper credit. The big difference in this method is the addition of a yarnover to each i-cord row – this makes for a rounder, stretchier edging, which is perfect for projects where the fabric also has a lot of stretch. I used this yarnover method in my Ribbon Throw, and the instructions look like this:
With dpns and MC, CO 3 sts. Slide these 3 sts to the other end of the dpn, k2, sl1, YO, pick up and knit 1 st from the edge of the blanket…, then pass the slipped st and yo over. *Slide 3 sts just worked to other end of dpn, k2, sl1, YO, pick up and knit 1 st from blanket edge, pass sl st and YO over, rep from *, working one picked up stitch and row of i-cord between each garter ridge.
The yarnover can be a little fiddly to catch and pass over the picked up stitch, but the result is worth the effort – the edging has quite a lot of give, and won’t affect the drape of the bias garter fabric in Ribbon Throw. I also wanted to have the edging colours match the body of the blanket, so I worked out a method for striping the i-cord while maintaining the stitch tension:
